SMUD offers a $50 instant rebate on a smart thermostat in 2026, but only through its online SMUD Energy Store. SMUD says there's an additional incentive when you join its My Energy Optimizer program with a qualifying new thermostat.
SMUD's rebates page doesn't state the amount of the My Energy Optimizer incentive, so this page doesn't either. Here's what the page showed on October 12, 2026.
How Much Is SMUD's Smart Thermostat Rebate?
It's a $50 instant rebate as of October 12, 2026. SMUD says to claim it by shopping for smart thermostats online at the SMUD Energy Store, and notes that SMUD thermostat rebates are not available in stores.
| SMUD offer (official page, October 12, 2026) | Amount | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Smart thermostat instant rebate | $50 | Buy online at the SMUD Energy Store |
| My Energy Optimizer | Additional incentive (amount not stated on the rebates page) | Join with a qualifying new smart thermostat |

Can I Get the Rebate at a Store?
No. SMUD's page says its thermostat rebates are not available in stores. The $50 instant rebate applies to smart thermostats bought online at the SMUD Energy Store.
That's different from SMUD's appliance rebates. Its refrigerator and clothes washer instant rebates are valid only at The Home Depot and RC Willey locations in SMUD's service area.
What Is My Energy Optimizer?
It's SMUD's program that rewards customers for shifting some energy use out of peak hours, when demand is highest. SMUD says you get an additional incentive when you join with a qualifying new smart thermostat, and that participants earn rewards for taking part.
SMUD explains that on extremely hot days, electricity demand can spike so much that delivering power becomes expensive, and the program helps protect the grid and keep prices down. Check SMUD's program page for the current incentive amount and terms before you enroll.
Is There Money for an Old Thermostat?
Yes, if it contains mercury. SMUD's page says you can get a $30 rebate for each mercury thermostat you drop off for safe disposal through ThermostatCare.
